The obsession with TTK is hurting Warzone

    Posted: 25 Aug 2021 01:51 PM PDT

Don't get me wrong - I was obsessed with finding the fastest TTK gun and using it, but then it dawned on me. I can't control recoil for shit.

What streamers, JGOD and True Game Data and the like, have created is a culture around TTK. A guns effectivity is solely measured by that statistic. There might be some credence given to handling as a downside to a gun, but for the most part, TTK is now the dominate measure of a gun's effectivity in the Warzone.

You can see this shift effecting Raven where most all of their balancing adjustments are due to TTK. The AS VAL? TTK was too high. Other gun nerfs? "Our effort to raise the TTK". In this obsession with TTK, there's a couple big things that come of it:

    1. Diversity of gunplay is impacted. This is a big one because before you could balance your style around the benefits and shortcomings of a weapon. The AS Val, as an example again, had the small mag. You had to compensate for that by altering how you take engagements to be able to disengage and reload more frequently. Plus the recoil was such that it was really ineffective at range. The AMAX, although "the king for too long", had the recoil to consider. LMGs are slow and bulky, etc. You get the point. Flatline adjusting the guns to match the TTK across the board, while still leaving the shortcomings of guns means that we then we all choose the same gun because why would I use a small mag VAL or high recoil amax when I could pick the lazer beam with the same TTK.
    2. Recommendations on TTK are generally wrong. "This gun has the highest TTK so it is disgusting" blah blah. TTK doesn't take recoil to account hardly EVER. Jgod is a huge offender of this. He recently stated the Krig now takes an extra bullet to kill so it's dead. The issue is that the Krig has zero recoil, much like the Kilo did at it's peak, so you can hit all your shots easily. A gun shouldn't be considered dead because it takes one extra bullet to kill when the benefit of that gun is that it's so easy to land all your shots.
    3. TTK is a very finicky thing to balance. With headshot multipliers on some guns, different damage ranges, and values depending on the limb, TTK is inherently challenging to quantify in a realistic way. Streamers are comparing guns based on one set senario, i.e. all body shots with one headshot, and then passing judgement. It's a really poor use of data analysis because different guns serve different purposes and this method doesn't account for 95% of the actual situations people face, but I digress. The point here is that TTK is then used to hype up the fan base, which then Raven changes a gun based on TTK alone, and the cycle continues.

Don't get me wrong. TTK does have a place in balancing, but streamers have really hurt the game in this sense because it's a very narrow way of looking at the game, and just leads to a very bland weapon pool.

TLDR: Streamers use "stats" as an angle for content, which has caused warzone to be balanced solely on TTK and that isn't good.

I've played Warzone basically since release, and I've NEVER been able to do this until yesterday.

Why haven't they brought back Realism Mode? They gave it to us two or three times, once with 200 players. Great mode that needs a comeback.
